US Superstar and World-famous singer Mariah Carey has officially announced her battle with Bipolar Disorder.
Having been diagnosed in 2001 when a mental breakdown led to her hospitalization, she has been living in denial for all these years, unable to accept her personality disorder. Now, the singer is ready to share her battle.
Carey got divorced from Nick Cannon in 2016. They share twins Monroe and Moroccan. How much her battle has contributed to her failed relationship is up for speculation.
“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she said. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.” Now she is doing well in life and ready to open up about her diagnosis. She said that she feels more balanced and medications seem to be working well for her.
“A mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).” According to the Mayo Clinic’s definition, the disorder is quite common with more than 200,000 cases a year in the US.
“I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone,” Carey said. “It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
